William Byron’s penalty from NASCAR was rescinded on Thursday by the National Motorsports Appeals Panel.

For retaliating towards Denny Hamlin during the caution period of the Texas Motor Speedway race on September 25, Byron, the racer of the No. 24 Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports, had initially had a $50,000 penalty and 25 driver and owner points deducted.

Following a meeting on Thursday afternoon, the panel, which was made up of Hunter Nickell, Dale Pinilis, and Kevin Whitaker, decided to increase Byron’s fine to $100,000 but remove the 25-point punishment.

Only the punishment was changed by the panel, which confirmed the racer had broken Sections 4.3 and 4.4 of the NASCAR Member Code of Conduct.

The panel made its judgement to change the penalty without providing any justification.

After the points were restored, Byron is now 14 points above the cutoff for the playoff semifinal round going into Sunday’s race at the Charlotte Roval.

After Sunday’s race, Alex Bowman, Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, and Chase Briscoe are the four racers with the lowest point totals and are in risk of being eliminated.

Bowman will not progress in the driver playoffs as he will sit out his second straight race while treating concussion-related issues.
