The return of Kevin Magnussen to Formula One, according to Ayao Komatsu, has improved Mick Schumacher’s progress.

Ayao Komatsu, the director of Haas Trackside Engineering, has complimented Kevin Magnussen’s impact on Mick Schumacher.

As a last-minute replace for Russian racer Nikita Mazepin, the Dane was drafted back into the Haas squad at the beginning of the season.

With 14 points in his first four races after his comeback, he had a significant influence and put Schumacher under a lot of strain.

After criticism from the Haas administration, Schumacher, who was in his second full season of F1, finally began to score points. His highest result was P6 at the Austrian GP.

Komatsu was questioned how much of a beneficial influence Magnussen had had on Schumacher during the Japanese Grand Prix weekend.

“Quite a lot. When Kevin came back in the car in testing, he was a different person to two years ago,” said Komatsu.

“He’s so open and cherishing that challenge, and he’s very open to sharing information as well. So, Mick benefitted quite a lot on having that reference.”

Schumacher has progressed in 2022

Schumacher’s prospect in the game is still in doubt, despite his recent improvement in performance.

However, the second Haas seat is still up for grabs. Magnussen will compete for Haas in 2023.

Haas has noted Schumacher’s gains during the course of 2022, but Komatsu continued that it is unclear what kind of action the team would follow for 2023.

“He was always, always close to scoring points, but he couldn’t get there,” commented Komatsu.

“Then once he got that [points result at] Silverstone, that was huge step. He’s improved a lot this year.”
