The way through which Red Bull’s team members make a contribution to the decision-making process for its strategies has been described by Hannah Schmitz.
Hannah Schmitz has provided information on who participates in and how decisions on approach are taken.
The Hungarian Grand Prix was decided by a duel of pit strategy, as Red Bull prevailed after outwitting Ferrari’s competitors for the title.
Midway through the Hungaroring race, with Max Verstappen of Red Bull racing behind the two Ferraris, Red Bull decided to make their last pit stop ahead of their competitors.
Ferrari reacted to Verstappen’s pit stop for new Medium tyres by fitting Charles Leclerc with Hard tyres, who was leading the race at the time.
A few laps later, the race winner overtook a battling Leclerc and drove on to win, increasing his lead in the championship to 80 points.
Schmitz hails Red Bull’s “collaborative” strategy
Verstappen and driver Sergio Perez were started on Soft tyres by Red Bull, and their Principal Strategy Engineer, Schmitz, won accolades for their decision of approach.
Schmitz discussed the decision-making process behind their race-winning plans on Sky’s Any Driven Monday programme.
“We’re all very much a team. Throughout the weekend it’s very collaborative with listening to everybody’s different opinions and points of view. It’s not always just about the numbers and the data,” said Schmitz.
“The drivers have a lot of feeling in the car, so we try to take that on board, and take on board what the race engineers are looking at, which may be different data to the strategists.
“[We take] all that information on board and we discuss everything, but at the end of the day it is a strategy call.
“So then we’ll make the final call, but we try and work as a team and use as much information as we can to make those decisions.”
