Coy Gibbs, father of Ty Gibbs, the 2022 Xfinity Series champion, and vice chairman and chief operations officer of Joe Gibbs Racing, passed away early on Sunday morning, the team reported.
JGR announced the following statement at around 3 p.m. ET:
“It is with great sorrow that Joe Gibbs Racing confirms that Coy Gibbs (co-owner) went to be with the Lord in his sleep last night. The family appreciates all the thoughts and prayers and asks for privacy at this time.”
Before the beginning of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series championship race, Coy Gibbs’ dad, JGR owner Joe Gibbs, and his son Ty both left for North Carolina.
Four racers will be vying for the series championship in Sunday’s race, including Christopher Bell, a Cup racer for JGR.
On Saturday night, Ty, the family’s driver, earned his seventh race of the year and his first NASCAR championship while Coy was there at Phoenix Raceway. Ty is Coy’s 20-year-old son.
“I’ve been through this before in multiple sports. Ty hasn’t,” Coy said after the race. “So, it was more watching him and seeing how he’s going to react during the day. I think he’s just doubled down and did his job after making a huge mistake last week.
“It was fun to watch that.”
Coy is a longtime NASCAR racer and assistant coach with the NFL’s Washington Commanders. He is the son of NASCAR and NFL Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs.
Between 1991 through 1994, Gibbs played linebacker at Stanford University. In 2000, Gibbs made his NASCAR start in the Truck Series, sharing the racing duties of the No. 18 Chevrolet with his brother, J.D., who passed away in 2019 from complications after a protracted fight with a degenerative neurological condition, also at the age of 49.
Coy started competing regularly in the Truck Series in 2001, scoring two top-five results, and the next year, he placed 10th in the final rankings. He took Mike McLaughlin’s spot in the then-Xfinity Series in 2003 and finished in the top ten twice.
He joined the group as an assistant for offensive quality control in 2004, following Joe Gibbs’ re-engagement as Washington’s head coach, and remained in that position until 2007.
Coy Gibbs established the JGRMX team in 2008, and in 2016 he was appointed to his present position as vice chairman and COO, where he is in charge of the company’s NASCAR initiatives.
Ty, Case, Jett, and Elle are the four children that Coy and his wife, Heather, have.
