Joey Logano defeats Chastain to earn the 2022 NASCAR Cup championship

The 2022 season title and the NASCAR Cup Series season finale at Phoenix on Sunday went to Joey Logano, giving owner Roger Penske the first-ever IndyCar and NASCAR titles in the same year.

With 29 of the 312 laps left, Logano overtook Chase Briscoe and took the lead. He subsequently had to hold off Ryan Blaney of his Penske team by 0.301 seconds to take the victory and secure his second Cup Series championship.

“Hell yeah, guys. Good job. Thank you, thank you, thank you!” As soon as he received the checkered flag, Logano said over the team radio.

Will Power awarded Penske their 17th IndyCar Series title in September. Penske’s third Cup victory comes from Logano.

Ross Chastain, the final-lap leader and fastest driver on the course, came in third, 1.2 seconds behind Logano. Chastain did not have sufficient time to catch Logano or Blaney in order to try to pass without a late caution.

Logano has now won four races in a row in 2022, including two playoff races. Logano has now won 31 times in his career and won two championships (his other came in 2018).

“We did it! We’re champions again, yes! Oh, my God, I’m so excited,” Logano, 32, said. “Thank you to everybody, my team. You guys are amazing. Gave me a good race car, good pit stop there at the end, got us up in front. Boy, that was just intense there at the end.

“It’s all about championships. That’s what it’s all about, and we worked so hard the last couple weeks trying to put ourselves in position. And everything that happened in 2020, I knew we just wanted to have a solid run and do this today.

“It’s such a big deal to win these championships. It impacts so many people’s lives.”

Logano also spoke about the passing early on Sunday morning of Coy Gibbs, vice chairman of Joe Gibbs Racing and dad of 2022 Xfinity Series champion Ty Gibbs and Joe Gibbs, a member of the NFL and NASCAR Halls of Fame.

“Obviously the news this morning with Coy, too, I don’t know what to think. But obviously my condolences go to the Gibbs family,” he said. “But just an incredible day for us, and kind of mixed emotions at the moment.”

Since this was the first Cup Series season with a Next Gen car, Logano claimed he never had any doubts about his ability to claim the championship.

“I knew going into this thing that we’re going to win the championship. I told the guys we were the favorite from Daytona, and we truly believed it, and that’s the difference,” he said.

“Man, it’s like I said, I had a good team with a bunch of confidence, and we had all the reason in the world to be confident. I’ve never been truly this ready for a championship race, and yeah, we did it, man.

“I can’t believe it.”

Kevin Harvick came in fifth, with Briscoe coming in fourth.

William Byron, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, and Christopher Bell made up the final ten.

In terms of the series rankings, Chastain comes in second, Bell comes in third, and Chase Elliott, who came in 28th and was involved in an accident, comes in fourth.
