Sebastian Vettel is optimistic that he and Aston Martin will be able to collaborate to move the team forward in 2022, but he is realistic about how far the team can develop.
Sebastian Vettel acknowledges that he feels a sense of obligation to help Aston Martin develop.
In 2021, the four-time World Champion finished his first season with the team, and it proved to be a more difficult season than the team had previously experienced in 2020 under the name Racing Point.
While Vettel is frustrated at times, he recognizes that it is a “luxury problem” in the larger scheme of things.
“As a sportsman, I’m annoyed and do everything I can to make it faster,” Vettel told F1-Insider.
“But it’s not life-threatening, that’s true. In that sense, it’s a luxury problem. I don’t have any existential problems and can freely determine my life, like many others in Central Europe.
“That doesn’t mean, however, that I don’t want to do everything in my own little sporting microcosm to win. Otherwise it would no longer make sense.”
Hopes for 2022
Vettel is obviously optimistic that Aston Martin will continue to improve in 2022.
“In a way, I feel that responsibility, yes,” the German responded when asked if he felt a responsibility to lead the team ahead.
“The motivation is there, we are trying to improve together and the team is trying to turn everything around that is possible.”
With a slew of new regulations about to be implemented in Formula One next season, Vettel believes Aston Martin has a chance.
He does not anticipate a significant improvement as a result of this.
“The new rules offer a great opportunity in 2022,” Vettel said.
“But we also have to remain realistic and not talk about being favourites, but look at how good our car is.”
In the 2021 Constructors’ Championship, Aston Martin finished seventh, while Vettel finished 12th in the Drivers’ World Championship.
