With his latest Red Bull deal, Max Verstappen is on track to break Michael Schumacher’s record, which will be surpassed by Lewis Hamilton soon.
Max Verstappen’s latest Red Bull deal ensures that the World Champion Dutchman will remain with the team and in Formula 1 until at least 2028, a deal that will establish new records.
Verstappen has been with Red Bull since 2014, when he started as a rookie driver. With the contract, he will have spent 14 years with the squad.
Verstappen made the jump from Formula 3 to Formula 1 in 2015 with Toro Rosso, before signing the top Red Bull team midway through the following season and winning his first race in Barcelona.
When his new deal expires in 2028, he will have accomplished more seasons and races for one team than any other driver in Formula One ever, breaking Michael Schumacher’s current records.
Records on the horizon for loyal Verstappen
Between 1996 and 2006, Schumacher was a Ferrari driver for 11 seasons, competing in 181 races for the Scuderia.
For the time being, the record stands, but Lewis Hamilton is getting closer to shattering both of them.
In the 2022 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the Briton will overtake Schumacher’s 181-race total.
However, he won’t start his 12th season with the German squad until 2024, and his existing contract just keeps him at Brackley until the end of 2023.
How far can Verstappen go?
Verstappen will finish the 2028 season with 13 years of work for Red Bull and 256 race starts assuming Formula One maintains its 23-race calendar.
Verstappen will finish eighth in the all-time standings after accounting for his 23 race starts with sister team Toro Rosso.
Verstappen, on the other hand, will be only 30 years old at that point, with plenty of opportunity to grow as a Grand Prix driver. And history will remember that both Schumacher and Hamilton won more Formula One championships in their thirties than in their twenties, according to the young Dutchman.
