Charles Leclerc began the Spanish Grand Prix on pole position after setting the best lap in the last test session on Saturday.

The Monegasque erred on his first run in Q3, but recovered to finish fastest of everyone in the closing moments.

Max Verstappen, whose qualifying endeavours were disrupted by a DRS problem, followed him on the front row, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in third.

George Russell and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes were in P4 and P6, respectively, with Verstappen’s Red Bull colleague Sergio Perez in fifth place.

Fernando Alonso, who classified 17th, was forced to start from the bottom of the line after receiving an engine change punishment.
