George Russell will be able to race farther up the F1 track in 2022 with Mercedes following three years at the end of the field. The Britishman, on the other hand, claims that his mindset hasn’t changed.
George Russell has stated that he is not considering a title challenge in 2022, and that his concentration would be the same as it was at Williams.
Given the Grove-based team’s current problems, the Briton spent his first three seasons in Formula 1 largely battling at the back of the grid.
Russell, on the other hand, will be capable of competing significantly closer to the head of the pack in 2022 after signing the championship-winning Mercedes team.
Since 2014, the team has won eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships, with their drivers winning the World Championship in every year until 2021.
Russell: “The approach is the same”
Despite the Silver Arrows’ obvious title-winning credentials, Russell is not excited about the prospect of competing for a title.
“It’s not even something I’m thinking about, to be honest,” Russell told media including RacingNews365.com at the recent pre-season test in Barcelona.
“I think it’s quite incredible how racing drivers’ minds work, that when you put the helmet on, it doesn’t matter if you’re fighting for the win, or – for me for the last few years – fighting at the back of grid.
“You always go in with the exact same mindset.”
Mercedes’ stand-in appearance was “just another race”
Russell uses the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix as an instance, where he replaced Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes after the seven-time World Champion tested positive for COVID-19.
Despite appearing to be on track for victory, Russell was unable to complete the race owing to mechanical issues at a pit stop.
“I had the best example of that in Bahrain when I raced for Mercedes,” he explained.
“For me, that was just another race. When we [were] out in front or starting from the front row, the approach is the same, the mindset’s the same, the work you put into the event post-event is exactly the same.
“So [the approach is] working on the process, and worry about everything afterwards.”
