A mechanical problem caused Oscar Piastri’s F1 start at the Bahrain Grand Prix to end quickly, but McLaren team manager Andrea Stella was still capable of identifying a developing area for the Australian.
Oscar Piastri’s key area of improvement after making his Formula One start is “overall racecraft,” according to McLaren team manager Andrea Stella.
The Australian had a challenging beginning for his first professional season. He qualified for the Bahrain Grand Prix in P18 but was compelled to withdraw from the race after just 13 laps owing to a technical problem.
Stella expects that Piastri will benefit coming forward from spending more time behind the wheel in light of this.
“I think [it] is the overall racecraft that we need to develop,” Stella told media, including RacingNews365.com.
“But not because there’s any lack of talent. It’s just time in the car really.”

Overall, Stella was pleased with what he observed from Piastri throughout the weekend and thinks there is potential for progress to continue moving forward.
“We are very pleased with what we saw in qualifying,” the team boss explained.
“Because, apart from the big oversteer he had in [Turn] 2 – which meant he lost basically the possibility to go into 2 in a single corner – in some other corners, he was a match for Lando [Norris], which is really very encouraging.
“In terms of pure speed [on] new tyres, and in the race, [his] race speed, race consistency lap after lap, was the best long run he has done.
“So [we hope he can] just carry on in all areas, with the same methodical and progressive approach that he has had so far.”
Norris, a teammate of Piastri’s, had to make six pit stops throughout the race owing to a pneumatic problem with his MCL60, and he eventually withdrew from competition just before the finish line.
