At Richmond (Virginia) Raceway on Sunday, Kyle Larson led a sweep of the top rows by Chevrolet.
The final driver to qualify in the last round on Saturday was Larson, who outpaced Chevy racer Ross Chastain (116.883 mph) for the pole with an aggregate lap pace of 117.177 mph.
For Larson, the current Cup Series winner, it is his third pole of the year and 13th overall. Larson has failed to claim a victory after starting on the pole this season.
“I definitely got in there (Turns 1 and 2) a little too hot and got loose but I felt like I got through the center and off OK and was decent in (Turns) 3 and 4,” Larson said.
“I’m happy. It’s cool to get a pole here at Richmond – I was not expecting to do that. I didn’t think we were that good in practice, so I’m happy with the hard work everybody has been putting in on our Chevys.
“Now we’ll go chase another win.”
In a Toyota, Denny Hamlin came in third (116.485 mph), while William Byron and Alex Bowman, who are drivers with Larson at Hendrick Motorsports, completed the top 5.
Erik Jones, Ryan Blaney, Cole Custer, Brad Keselowski, and Martin Truex Jr. round out the top ten starts for the race on Sunday.
On the first of his two qualifying circuits in the championship round, Blaney made contact with the wall, but it didn’t look like much damage had been done.
