Jimmie Johnson’s time as an official IndyCar driver is quickly approaching.

On Sunday at Barber Motorsports Park, the seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion will make his IndyCar Series debut (3 p.m. ET, NBC). Johnson, 45, moved to IndyCar on a part-time basis after retiring from NASCAR at the end of the 2020 season.

Over the next two seasons, Johnson will drive for Chip Ganassi Racing on all road and street courses. Scott Dixon, a six-time IndyCar champion, will be his teammate. Johnson and Dixon have a combined total of 13 major North American racing championships, making them the most successful team in modern auto racing history.

Johnson spoke with Yahoo Sports ahead of his first race to talk about how he’s prepared to compete in an IndyCar, what he’s learned from Dixon, and how he’ll define success in the 2021 season.

“From a growth standpoint, I’ve come very far in the environments I’ve been able to simulate in a test session with a single car,” Johnson said. “But there’s still so much more to a race weekend that I haven’t experienced and rolling into Barber I get to try it all for the first time.”
