Alpine has had an interesting start to the Formula 1 season.
The car appeared to be designed exclusively for 2022 at first, but a sharp increase in speed has carried them into the upper-midfield in qualifying, and Fernando Alonso believes the team will be extremely quick in Monaco.
The next race on the 2021 schedule will be held at the legendary principality circuit, where Alonso will be trying to rebound after a late spark-plug malfunction in Barcelona saw him drop out of the points and down to 17th place in the final laps.
“I think the Alpine car will be really fast in Monaco,” Alonso explained at the post-race press conference.
“I feel good about the performance there, one of the things I have to improve for sure is getting the most out of a lap.
“I need to push the car, have confidence in the car, but I’m not there yet, I’m working 100% towards that right now.”
When asked about the team’s current position on the grid, the former Renault driver stated that Alpine has more than enough to finish fifth in the constructors’ title.
“We’re going to have to wait for a couple of big prizes, but I think we can be the fifth team,” he added.
“After Ferrari and McLaren, I think we have given a good response regarding the performance of the car, I think we had a better performance in qualifying than this race.
“This is good news because in the first races it was difficult to even be in Q3.”
After cutting short his tenure with McLaren, Alonso had been away of Formula One for two full seasons, but with Alpine promising a bright future following the 2022 regulation changes, the Spanish driver is beginning to feel more at ease in the sport.
“It’s crucial that I get the most out of the car on Saturdays,” he detailed.
“I’m still a bit cautious about my work with the car, I’m comfortable with the car but I need to work on that aspect too.
“The most important thing is to get more performance out of the car, and that’s on me, to identify ways to get more performance, we’re working on that and this week is going to be intense in that sense.”
