The 2022 aero regulations may make the Circuit Paul Ricard a new difficulty, according to Aston Martin racers Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel, before this weekend’s French Grand Prix.
The French Grand Prix this weekend should feature a greater performance thanks to F1’s revised aero rules for 2022, according to Aston Martin racers Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel.
The French Grand Prix, which made its F1 comeback in 2018, has occasionally heavily criticised for the procession-style races held at the Circuit Paul Ricard.
But last year’s spectators were treated to a thrilling race when Max Verstappen overtook Lewis Hamilton with two circuits to go, and both Stroll and Vettel think the new Formula 1 cars’ attributes will make for an entertaining spectacle.
“Paul Ricard is quite a challenging circuit, with a variety of corners and some long, winding sections towards the end of the lap,” said Stroll.
“The ground-effect cars we have this year appear to be producing better racing, so I hope we can put on a good show for the fans here.”
Vettel is excited about cars tackling high-speed turns in 2022
The racers must navigate a variety of low- and high-speed turns at Paul Ricard, which lacks many severe braking zones. Vettel emphasised the added difficulty the 2022 aero regulations will bring.
“Paul Ricard’s high-speed corners should gain an added dimension with these ground-effect cars, and the lower-speed corners will provide a challenge for everybody,” he explained.
“The previous weekends have not always been kind to us for one reason or another, so it would be nice to pick up some momentum before the summer break.”
While Stroll is five positions further adrift and has only three points, Vettel is now 14th in the Drivers’ Championship with 15 points.
With 18 points and ninth place in the Constructors’ Championship, Silverstone-based Aston Martin has had a poor year. It is nine points behind AlphaTauri in eighth place.
