Alfa Romeo team principal Fred Vasseur has announced that the squad is seeking to offer Sauber Academy racer Theo Pourchaire a Free Practice 1 excursion in 2022. Pourchaire has been building a name for himself in Formula 2.
Manager of Alfa Romeo Fred Vasseur has said that the squad is looking for a “way” to allow Formula 2 racer Theo Pourchaire to participate in Free Practice 1.
Having six race weekends left in the season, Pourchaire, a part of the Sauber Academy, is third in the F2 rankings.
Pourchaire has won the Feature Race twice thus far in 2022 and is currently just one point behind Logan Sargeant in the rankings.
Therefore, it seems likely that the Frenchman will take part in a Formula 1 FP1 session.
In search of a “solution” for Pourchaire is Vasseur
All teams are required by recent F1 rules to run a young driver in FP1 at least twice throughout the season.
Vasseur acknowledges that Alfa Romeo must look for a chance to give Pourchaire his shot in Free Pracatice 1 now that the 2022 season is halfway through.
“We will find an FP1 [session] because it’s per regulation that you have to give an FP1 to the rookie,” Vasseur told media, including RacingNews365.com.
“But when we discuss about it, if you consider when you have the F2 races, we have some events with the Sprint races, we will have some events with tyre testing.
“And you can’t imagine [giving] the rookie session to Singapore, even Suzuka will be difficult, even if I think that Max [Verstappen] did it a couple of years ago.
“You don’t have so many races until the end, but we’ll find the solution, don’t worry – by regulation, it’s mandatory.”
FP1 offers a chance for the rookies
In the early half of the year, certain F1 squads already gave one of their cars to a rookie racer during an FP1 session.
Nyck de Vries, the Formula E champion, drove the Williams in the Spanish Grand Prix while Juri Vips, the squad’s test and reserve racer, took the wheel of the Red Bull. However, the Estonian has since been fired after using a racial slur in an online gaming video.
Robert Kubica, the test and backup driver for Alfa Romeo, replaced Zhou Guanyu for the first practise session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
