Verstappen wants to avoid “football fans” from taking over in Formula One

Max Verstappen has urged supporters to show respect whether their team wins or loses due to current instances of booing among some spectators at F1 race weekends.

Following current instances of booing, Max Verstappen compared the actions of some F1 spectators to those of specific football crowds.

Boos were directed at Verstappen during the British Grand Prix. In Austria a week later, Lewis Hamilton faced similar treatment from some spectators, as cheers could be heard after the British driver crashed out of Friday’s qualifying session.

Verstappen has made analogies between this and how certain football supporters act in light of this.

“First of all: In every country, the fans in the grandstand decide the atmosphere,” Verstappen told German publication F1-Insider.

“Those are the fans we consciously perceive, very loudly. I think on other parts of the track there is always a healthy mix between the individual fan groups.

“Basically, I think it’s a shame that the fans actually react like football fans.”

Verstappen expects more respect from the supporters

Verstappen is dissatisfied with the attitude expressed by some fans in this regard

“They always boo at the opponent. In Holland they boo Lewis, in England me,” he explained.

“I think it’s a pity because we often fight extremely tough, high-quality fights. You have to respect your opponent.”

The Red Bull driver believes that football fans may adopt this attitude because he loves watching football match himself whether his favorite football team wins or loses.

“I am a PSV fan. But when I watch a great football match, I enjoy it, whether my team wins or loses,” Verstappen continued.

“It would be nice if fan behaviour in our sport was the same. And that, despite all the rivalry, opponents are also treated with respect.”
