Albon confesses that he still yet “shaken off the rust” from his F1 return

While not many Formula One racers enjoy testing, Alex Albon is willing to log additional miles as he tries to readjust after a year off the track.

Alex Albon, who returned to the F1 grid in 2022, acknowledges that he is still “shaking off the rust.”

After Sergio Perez took his spot on Red Bull’s racing squad in 2021, the British-Thai racer was obliged to sit out a whole season.

Albon did continue to work with the squad, though, serving as their test and backup racer, until negotiating a 2022 return with Williams.

Albon has significantly outpaced teammate Nicholas Latifi from the season’s beginning and has already scored twice for the squad.

Albon wants to increas mileage after a year.

While not all racers enjoy testing, Albon, 26, enjoys it given his time away from the starting line. Albon was scheduled to take part in a Pirelli tyre test in the days following the Austrian Grand Prix.

“I don’t mind [testing], especially for me because I had a year out,” Albon told the F1 Nation podcast.

“It’s actually nice to get mileage under my belt. I’ve had a good start to the season, but I still feel like I’m still ironing out, shaking off the rust a little bit, to some extent.

“So the more mileage the better for me. I’m not at that stage where I find testing boring.”

Williams’ improvements offer a “excellent platform”

Williams’ only chance to thoroughly test their modifications in dry conditions was at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Albon, who finished the race in 12th place overall among 17th-place finishers and was only six seconds behind 10th-place Fernando Alonso at the finish line, was optimistic about the advancement the improvements can bring.

“Generally speaking, we definitely have more downforce,” he explained.

“That’s obviously the most important thing, and the best thing. In terms of characteristics, it’s quite similar.

“We do need to try and iron the imbalances out, because they aren’t helping that time. We know that.

“It feels like now we’ve got a good platform, a good base car. It’s just about fine-tuning it.”
