How F1 teams are able to continue developing power units despite the freeze

From the beginning of the 2022 season until 2025, F1 power unit providers will not be permitted to modify their engines. They can still improve performance, though.

When the power unit freeze for Formula 1 went into effect in 2022, no manufacturer was able to offer improvements that increased performance.

This basically prevents Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, and Red Bull Powertrains (Honda) from making any enhancements except from those that increase reliability while it is in effect through 2025.

Updating the specifications for the control electronics, energy storage (battery), and MGU-K was possible in 2022 up until September 1. But there won’t be any further updates after this year.

Manufacturers can still make changes that improve the car’s overall performance, though.

“The packaging is still a possibility under the regulations”, Alpine Executive Director Bruno Famin told the media.

“We can imagine changing the inlet line or changing the exhaust line to other to allow our colleagues from Enstone to make a better aerodynamic [solution].”

Teams are limited in the amount of aerodynamic experimentation they can conduct between their wind tunnel work and CFD simulations due to the cost limitation and the power unit freeze.

Famin continued, “We’re going to be very limited in this area again, we’re going to have only one software [run] per year now.”

“But it’s more on the drivability, the idea is to progress with very small margin now. It’s not pure performance, but it’s more drivability and integration/aerodynamic gains.”
