Kevin Harvick’s NASCAR penalty will be appealed by Stewart-Haas Racing

Following the Cup race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) plans to appeal the L2 penalty imposed by NASCAR.

Rodney Childers, the crew chief for the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford Mustang driven by Kevin Harvick, was penalized $100,000 and disqualified from four of the final 5 races of the 2022 season.

The racer and squad, who were disqualified from the playoffs in the first round, are almost certain to place 16th (last) in the rankings as a result of the punishment. The deck lid was then identified as the spec item that SHR is thought to have changed, which is why NASCAR has imposed the penalty.

SHR acknowledged to Motorsport.com that they have appealed the penalty. Stephen Doran has been appointed the temporary crew chief for the No. 4 car at the Charlotte Roval for this weekend in the interim. This was done to guarantee that Childers could watch the last season at Phoenix from the pit box regardless of how the appeal turned out.

Recent history shows that NASCAR penalties have been reversed after appeals. After being disqualified from the Xfinity Series playoffs for an intake manifold infringement, Jeremy Clements successfully appealed the sanctioning body’s decision in September. After his unexpected triumph at Daytona International Speedway, the problem was discovered.

And just last week, Texas Motor Speedway’s Cup race officials reversed the entirety of the 25-point penalty they had imposed on William Byron for hitting Denny Hamlin while the race was under caution, but they increased the monetary penalties to $100,000.

Similarly heavy L2 penalties were imposed on Front Row Motorsports (FRM) and Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing (RFK) previously this year. FRM chose not to make an appeal, while RFK opted not to pursue one either.
