Harvick defeats Bell at Richmond for his second consecutive victory in the Cup

Kevin Harvick is suddenly 2-0 and in the running for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series title after a 65-race undefeated race.

Following a late-race round of green-flag pit stops, Harvick returned back into the lead but spent the next four laps frantically trying to hold off Christopher Bell, who was running on tyres that were 12 laps fresher.

Bell came close, but Harvick prevailed at the finish line at Richmond (Virginia) Raceway by 0.441 seconds.

“Yeah, boys! Great job! Great job!”  When Harvick won consecutive races for the first time this season, he cheered over his team radio. With his triumph previous weekend in Michigan, Harvick ended an unbeaten streak of 65 contests.

With his victory on Sunday, the Bakersfield, California, native, who is now 46, became one of only 10 racers to have won at least 60 Cup races in their car

“You just don’t know. Like I said last week, the cars have been running good week-in and week-out and you see a lot better understanding of what’s going on with how we adjusted on the car through the first run and we’re able to get our car handling a lot better,” Harvick said. “I think as it got dark, the race track really came to our (car).”

“Well, I knew he was coming, but I forgot to shift down the front straightaway the last time. I was not paying attention and he got closer than he should have,” Harvick responded when questioned about Bell’s approach in the closing laps.

“I made a mistake there a couple laps doing the same thing. I wasn’t shifting on the back and I was shifting in the front. There was a lot going on, and made a couple mistakes, let him get too close.”

Harvick was questioned about the significance of momentum in the playoffs after two consecutive victories occurred soon before the beginning of the playoffs.

“We’re just going to keep doing the things that we’re doing,” he said. “I think we just have to keep an open mind about things and keep progressing and keep understanding the car, understanding what we could have done better today, understanding what we could have done better in qualifying yesterday and do the same thing over and over.”

Chase Elliott came in sixth, Chris Buescher came in third, and Denny Hamlin came in fourth.

Joey Logano, Martin Truex Jr., Aric Almirola, Kyle Busch, and Ryan Blaney made up the final ten.

“I love whenever the races stay green and you’re able to play your cards a little bit different. Really proud of everyone on this No. 20 crew to be able to come back from how we started,” Bell said of the second-place finish.

“Very tough weekend for us. We didn’t practice very well and we didn’t qualify very well. And the guys did a really good job getting this (car) up front and where we needed to be at the end.”
