For the second time in his career, Zinedine Zidane has resigned as Real Madrid manager with immediate effect.

After a dramatic final day of the season, Real Madrid lost the Spanish La Liga title to city rivals Atlético Madrid by just a point on Saturday.

“Real Madrid C. F. announces that Zinedine Zidane has decided to bring an end to his current spell as head coach of our club,” the Spanish club said in a statement.

“We must now respect his decision and express our gratitude for his professionalism, dedication and passion over the years and what he means to Real Madrid.

“Zidane is one of Real Madrid’s great icons and his legacy extends beyond what he has achieved as a coach and player at our club.”He is aware that he has a place in the hearts of the Real Madrid fans and that he will always have a home at Real Madrid.”

Real Madrid had a disappointing season despite finishing second in La Liga behind Atlético Madrid and reaching the Champions League semifinals.

It’s the first time Real has concluded a season without winning a trophy in 11 years.

It’s not the first time Zidane has left the Spanish giants, who he played from 2001 to 2006.

The France legend was hired in 2016, after winning a historic three Champions League titles in a row and a single La Liga title.

He took a break in May 2018, only to return ten months later.

Zidane won the 2019-20 Spanish league title as well as the Spanish Super Cup during his second reign. The 48-year-old, though, has stepped down for the second time after leading the club to its first trophy-less season since 2009-10.
