Given that winning the title is now a “long shot,” Toto Wolff has revealed that Mercedes would be more experimental with their car over the remainder of the Formula 1 season.
Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes, believes the eight-time Constructors’ Defending Champions would use the remaining Formula 1 races in 2022 to “try stuff” since they are unlikely to win back the championship.
Since the introduction of the turbo-hybrid formula in 2014, Mercedes has dominated Formula One (F1). However, in 2022, Mercedes has suffered due to severe porpoising issues with their W13 car, resulting in the team unsure on how to resolve the issue and catch up to Red Bull and Ferrari.
Despite improvements in the last two races from racers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, Mercedes has yet to score a victory this year.
For the first time since 2011, the squad will enter the summer vacation without having claimed a racing triumph.
Red Bull may now get a jump start on 2023, according to Wolff, considering that the squad is almost 100 points ahead of Mercedes in the Constructors’ rankings.
Wolff claims that Mercedes may now “try stuff” for 2023
Hamilton, the experienced racer, was frequently given experimental components to test in practise earlier in the season as the squad struggled to comprehend the porpoising.
Furthermore, Wolff believes Mercedes can continue to push the envelope given that both titles are “long shots.”
“I think we need to stay humble, and look [at] race weekend after race weekend,” he told Sky Sports F1 after the Hungarian Grand Prix.
“We can try to learn and do the experiments [on the car, as] it’s a long shot for the championship this year.
“So we’re in a situation where we can try stuff, which was done in Friday [practice, which is] as frustrating as it is sometimes, to put us in a situation where we can actually fight for wins at the end of this season.”
Mercedes finds losing “very frustrating”
Mercedes has won 111 races since the turbo hybrid era began, and Wolff believes losing is “very upsetting” despite all of their achievements.
“Look, we have discussed all these years what would happen if we lose, and it happened,” he added.
“I can tell you it’s super frustrating. [You can think] whatever you want, however you think of how to pick yourself up and how to stay motivated.
“There was a moment on Friday [in Hungary] where I wasn’t the best me and it’s just a learning process.
“We’ll write the study afterwards about the oscillation between depression and exuberance.”
