Wolff exposes his “sheer anger” in heated debrief with Hamilton

Following the squad’s double Q2 withdrawal at Imola, Mercedes chief Toto Wolff has provided more details about his heated discussion with Lewis Hamilton.

After an ostensibly unpleasant conversation with Lewis Hamilton on training day at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Toto Wolff has presented his side of events.

Mercedes has had a rough weekend in Imola, with Wolff labelling the W13 as “undriveable” after first practise, with both Hamilton and driver George Russell finishing in Q2.

Before heading to the back of the Mercedes garage, tv coverage captured what seemed to be a tense exchange between Hamilton and Wolff.

Wolff and Hamilton shared “sheer anger”

After emphasising that the conversation with Wolff was “all internal stuff” that he “would rather not reveal,” Hamilton said.

Wolff has indeed provided additional details, stating that he and Hamilton shared “sheer anger,” but that the two had no animosity.

“It’s quite funny how it’s been interpreted,” Wolff told media, including RacingNews365.com.

“Lewis and I shared frustration that we weren’t really able to extract lap one performance [from the tyres] and how annoying it was, but it was basically the same point of view and just sheer anger.

“There is no division or there is no blaming or anything [like] that.”

Wolff: We’ve got to get out of this hole

Because neither Hamilton nor Russell were ready to make any progress in the Sprint, they will begin the Grand Prix on Sunday outside of the points-paying spots.

Wolff is not shocked that difficult situations are developing with Russell in 11th and Hamilton in 14th.

“There’s pressure in the system, but I would say [it’s] the necessary pressure to get things right,” added Wolff.

“Nobody in the team is anywhere near enjoying the ride at the moment.

“This team, we’ve done it in the past, and we just need to dig ourselves out of that hole.”
