Red Bull is hopeful that its mechanical concerns have been remedied ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, having suffered 3 retirements in several races.
Red Bull’s title ambitions have been given a new lease on life, according to Sergio Perez, who believes the squad’s early-season dependability issues are now behind them.
During the first three races, Perez and driver Max Verstappen both retired three times, losing a lot of points in the process.
Because of their problems, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari have built a comfortable lead at the top of the rankings heading into a home race in Italy.
However, after Verstappen’s triumph in Saturday’s Sprint at Imola, Red Bull enters Sunday’s 63-lap race confident that their mechanical problems are behind them.
“What gives us hope is that all the issues or the reliability problems we’ve had, we understood them and we were able to fix them,” Perez said, speaking to members of the media including RacingNews365.com.
“From now on, hopefully, there are no more surprises. Something unexpected can happen still, but we feel like we’ve [got] on top of them.”
Red Bull has a good chance of closing the distance against Ferrari
Verstappen’s trouble in Australia was researched by Honda in Japan, which located the core problem and delivered a solution in time for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend.
The race gives an opportunity for Red Bull to close the distance between themselves and Ferrari, thanks to the introduction of the Sprint.
Verstappen will begin in P1 on Sunday, with Perez in #3, on each side of Leclerc, the World Champion.
Perez acknowledges that the Milton Keynes-based team will need to increase their point total in the near future.
“This will be critical for us on our side, as a team, to make sure that we are able to collect the points that we are able to get, weekend by weekend,” Perez added.
“So far it’s been extremely painful [with the retirements].”
