Sebastian Vettel’s work ethic has pleased Aston Martin team president Otmar Szafnauer, who says Lance Stroll is learning from it as well.
Vettel joined Aston Martin at the start of the season, and after a rocky start, the German driver has gradually adjusted to his new surroundings.
With a runner-up finish at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, he earned the team’s first podium under the Aston Martin banner, and he would have added a second at the Hungarian race if not for a fuel infringement.
After the stewards first refused to overturn the penalty, Vettel was disqualified from the race, and Aston Martin dropped their appeal.
As a result, Vettel only has 30 points on the board, but that’s 12 more than his teammate Stroll.
Szafnauer reckons so far, so good.
“Seb brings a mentality that he already had when he won all those races and World championships,” he told Motorsport.com.
“He leaves no stone unturned in the way he goes into the weekend and what he asks of us.
“That goes for both sides of the garage.
“Lance and his team have learned from Seb, and that has helped us move forward.”
That the “brilliant” driver is once again enjoying racing is a bonus.
“Seb is brilliant,” Szafnauer continued.
“He came to us with the idea that he wanted to enjoy racing again. I often talk to him and I think he is enjoying racing again, which is great.”
Tom McCullough, Aston Martin’s performance director, is also pleased with Vettel’s integration into the team.
“Our ‘new boy,’ Sebastian, was disadvantaged at first by his unfamiliarity with how our car works and feels, then by the unreliability he experienced in the pre-season test in Bahrain,” he stated.
“But he has worked very diligently since then, in our simulator at the factory and at the circuits, to help us analyse our previous races with a view to preparing for our upcoming races in the best way possible.”
