With his victory at the Mexican Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has surpassed a record set by the legendary Ayrton Senna more than 30 years ago.
With his victory in Mexico, Max Verstappen has surpassed Ayrton Senna’s record set in 1988.
At the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, Verstappen won his ninth race of the 2021 season, passing Senna for the most victories by a Honda-powered driver in a single F1 season.
Senna established the record on his way to the first of his three world championships in 1988, at the start of McLaren-illustrious Honda’s career.
There were just 16 Grands Prix on the calendar in 1988, as compared to 22 this year. However, in terms of percentage wins, the two are tied: Senna won 50% of races held through 1988, while Verstappen has won nine of the 18 races held so far in 2021.
Sergio Perez became the first Mexican to lead a lap and finish on the podium on home soil, and it wasn’t the only record set by a Red Bull driver on Sunday.
