After a bizarre incident with Lewis Hamilton in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has been summoned before the stewards.

After getting into DRS range of Verstappen to attempt a move down the pit straight, the incident occurred late in the race.

Verstappen managed to keep his nose in front of Hamilton into Turn 1 and maintain the lead, but was urged to give position to Hamilton and appeared to do so down the back straight, confusing Hamilton. The Mercedes driver slowed behind the Red Bull, but the two collided, causing Hamilton’s front wing to be damaged.

Verstappen then lost position to Hamilton down the back straight before regaining it at the final corner. Verstappen was unable to keep off Hamilton as his aging Medium tyres failed, and the seven-time World Champion cantered home, establishing the fastest lap in the process.

Verstappen has been charged with a “alleged infraction of Article 2 (d) Chapter IV Appendix L of the FIA International Sporting Code” in relation to his driving when Hamilton collided with him.

The article reads: “Causing a collision, repetition of serious mistakes or the appearance of a lack of control over the car (such as leaving the track) will be reported to the stewards and may entail the imposition of penalties up to and including the disqualification of any driver.”

At 23:40 local time, Verstappen will face the stewards.

The race was won by Hamilton, who finished ahead of Verstappen, putting the two on equal points heading into the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
