Max Verstappen believes Red Bull can perform even stronger when the Formula One season restarts, despite possessing an 80-point World Championship lead.
Even though Red Bull now dominates both World Championships by a comfortable margin, Max Verstappen has pushed his squad to perform even stronger when the Formula 1 season begins.
Verstappen, the defending champion, and driver Sergio Perez both won one race within the first half of the 2022 season, putting Red Bull 93 points ahead of Ferrari’s 334 tally as they pursue their first Constructors’ championship since 2013.
When the race resumes at the Belgian Grand Prix, Ferrari’s leading racer Charles Leclerc will be 80 points adrift of Verstappen after numerous collisions and mistakes at the Italian team.
Verstappen has urged Red Bull to keep up their current level of effort even though he is getting closer to winning a second world championship.
Verstappen expects more from Red Bull
“I think as a team we still want to win more races and that’s what we’ll definitely try to do and after the break,” he told media.
Verstappen remarked, “It’s a nice lead, but we can’t have too many days [like Saturday],” referencing to his engine issue throughout qualifying in Hungary.
“We also had a few little issues with the clutch in the upshifts [in the race], which was not great to drive [with].
“Overall, of course it is good, but we [will] just keep on working and keep on trying to improve things.”
Red Bull not as powerful as they appear
Despite Ferrari having four victories to Red Bull’s nine, the RB18 hasn’t been as dominant as the numbers would suggest.
The F1-75 car has demonstrated similar pace to the Red Bull, but Ferrari is not winning races as effectively as Red Bull because to their persistent lack of dependability, strategy mistakes, and driving mistakes.
Verstappen was anxious to highlight this because he thought Ferrari had just made the “wrong call” about tyres in Budapest.
“Of course, we know that our car in general is quick, but I think throughout the race Ferrari was also very fast,” he pointed out.
“They just made the wrong call with the Hard tyre. It is about choosing the right tyres at the right time.
“There’s still a lot of things we can look into and [that] we can do better.
“Starting 10th and winning the race on a track like this is very, very good, but [there’s] a lot of things we will analyse and look into [to see] what we could have done better.”
