Valtteri Bottas believes that with a record-breaking 23 races planned for the 2022 Formula One season, there can’t be many more added. The Finn, on the other hand, sees how his hectic schedule will benefit him as he starts on the a new chapter with Alfa Romeo.
The F1 calendar is now “to the limit,” according to Valtteri Bottas, with a record-breaking 23 races scheduled for the 2022 season.
The 2019 season is expected to be the busiest in the sport’s history, with 22 Grands Prix scheduled to take place in 2021. While there has been talk of adding more venues in the future, Bottas believes that expanding the year beyond the current schedule will be challenging.
“I feel like we’re starting to get to the limit,” Bottas told the Beyond The Grid podcast.
“That’s what I feel. Having more than we’re going to have next year, with also quite [a] compressed calendar, I think we can’t have that many more. I mean, like how there’s time, and how logistically it’s going to be possible.
“But I think we’re in a good amount now. That’s my feeling.”
Despite the hectic year ahead, Bottas believes the events have been properly spaced.
“The calendar actually looks okay,” the Finn added.
“Initially I thought there [was] going be, like, four triple-headers, but there’s actually only two, and still we have an August break.
“Yes, it is hectic, but it is possible. But, the fun thing with Formula 1 [is] that the time just flies, and the adrenaline this sport gives you, it just keeps you going. It keeps you going almost forever.”
How the calendar can benefit Bottas at Alfa Romeo
Bottas’ F1 career will take a new turn in 2022, as he will drive for Alfa Romeo for the first time after leaving Mercedes after five years.
“In my situation, and for us as a team, probably, yeah,” Bottas said when asked if his busy schedule will help him acclimatize to his new environment quickly.
“But it’s also [the] same for everyone. With a new car, you do want the maximum mileage and experience, but I think it’s a good opportunity for us.”
At Alfa Romeo, Bottas will be joined by rookie Guanyu Zhou, making Alfa Romeo the only team on the grid in 2022 to run a completely new driver lineup.
