Since the two joined Mercedes in 2017, Lewis Hamilton has dominated Valtteri Bottas.
Lewis Hamilton may have won his fourth consecutive Formula One World Championship with Valtteri Bottas struggling to keep up with him last season, but the British racing superstar made it clear how he felt about the competition from his team-mate during the Bahrain Grand Prix. After winning his first world title, Nico Rosberg unexpectedly announced his retirement from the sport at the end of the 2016 season, prompting Mercedes to make a change.
After seeing Bottas impress with Williams, Mercedes decided to swoop in and sign him for the 2017 season.
In terms of Mercedes, it’s been a fantastic partnership, with the team winning a record seven Constructors’ Championships in a row.
However, since Bottas’ arrival, the combination has been fairly one-sided, with Hamilton finishing comfortably ahead of his teammate in each of the last four seasons.
Hamilton finished 124 points ahead of Bottas in the 2020 season, and Max Verstappen came close to stealing 2nd spot.
After George Russell’s impressive performance for Mercedes at the Sakhir Grand Prix, Bottas is under increasing pressure to close the gap this season.
Both Bottas and Russell’s contracts expire at the end of 2021, with Mercedes already admitting that they want to promote Russell in the future.
Whether it happens in 2022 completely depends on what happens this season, and Hamilton has already stated that he expects a close fight with Bottas.
“I think Valtteri… is getting stronger and stronger each year,” Hamilton remarked at the Bahrain Grand Prix in November.
