Valentino Rossi was that individual in MotoGP, and he has now announced his retirement. Few athletes reach the stage where their name is so synonymous with a sport that even those who have no interest are aware of their presence.
Rossi stated at a press conference in Austria on Thursday that he will retire at the end of the current MotoGP season, ending a 26-year career in the sport.
“Next year, my life will change, but it has been a long, long journey that was really fun,” Rossi explained.
“I said I would take a decision for next year after the summer break, and I decided to stop at the end of the season.
“Unfortunately, this will be my last half season as a MotoGP rider, and it’s difficult, it’s a very sad moment because it’s difficult to say and know that next year I won’t be racing with a motorcycle.”
Rossi won nine world titles over his 26-year career in MotoGP and experienced many unforgettable moments, both great and controversial.
“The most unforgettable were the three championships: 2001, 2004 and also 2008,” Rossi continued.
“I think I deserved the tenth title, but that’s how it is, I can’t complain about the results of my career.”
