The lone practise for this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International was dominated by racers from Hendrick Motorsports.
Group A
The initial set of motorists to The 20-minute session went without any issues at The Glen. There were a few incidents, such as Chase Briscoe briefly missing the bus stop and Corey LaJoie locking up in Turn 1. Erik Jones made a terrific save by sliding sideways on the entrance to the bus stop after taking too much of the curb.
With Kyle Larson, the incumbent Watkins Glen victor, finishing barely ahead of teammate Chase Elliott with a lap time of 1:11.293s, Hendrick Motorsports took the lead. A.J. Allmendinger, a previous WGI Cup champion, finished third, with Chris Buescher and Briscoe completing the top five.
Also in the five- and ten-lap averages, Larson was in first place.
Mike Rockenfeller, the overall victor of the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours, was 16.1 seconds slower than the leader in his Cup Series debut.
Group B
Halfway through the session, there was a red flag after it looked that some tungsten ballast had fallen from one of the cars. If that is indeed what is going on, the losing team will be subject to penalties.
Ty Gibbs’ slide into the tyre barrier at the beginning of the carousel ended the session’s brief return to green. Going up the esses, Christopher Bell also experienced a catastrophic engine failure.
“I just got a little bit too loose,” explained Gibbs. “These cars are on thin lines so when I landed, my tires slipped on the surface and it was just done after that.
With William Byron leading the charts at 1:11.601 seconds, Hendrick Motorsports was once again in the lead. The remaining top five players were Gibbs, Daniel Suarez, Justin Haley, and Austin Cindric.
In his debut, former F1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen performed admirably, finishing 10th in Group B and only four tenths off the pace.
