Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United on Tuesday for his first practice session since joining the club for $28 million from Juventus in Italy.
After receiving a suspension for yellow card accumulation that knocked him out of Portugal’s qualifier against Azerbaijan, Ronaldo was given approval to leave the national team camp early. On September 1, his two late goals guided Portugal to a remarkable 2-1 comeback win over Ireland, and he also set a new men’s global record for international goals. However, after removing his shirt to celebrate his second goal, Ronaldo was given a yellow card, which resulted in his suspension.
The 36-year-timing old’s worked out because he had to quarantine for five days upon his return to England. He eventually caught up with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and a few of his new Manchester United teammates at Carrrington training ground as he prepares for a possible second appearance against Newcastle United on Saturday, Sept. 11.
During his first spell with United, from 2003 until 2009, Ronaldo established himself as a United legend, winning three Premier League titles and the Champions League while also scoring 118 goals.
He’ll have four more days to get up to speed before United’s next Premier League match on Saturday, when Newcastle visit Old Trafford. Prior to his transfer, Ronaldo had completed preseason training with Juventus in the days preceding up to the August 31.
What number will Ronaldo wear?
Ronaldo left Manchester United in 2009 after wearing the No.7 shirt at Old Trafford, but he continued to wear the same number with Real Madrid and Juventus to promote his ‘CR7’ brand.
There was speculation that if he re-signed for United, he would have to wear a different number, given that Edinson Cavani had worn the No. 7 since joining on a free transfer in the summer of 2020.
Cavani, on the other hand, agreed to hand over the shirt to Ronaldo in return for the No. 21, which he also wears for Uruguay at the international level.
