The evolution of sneaker culture

Sneakers have evolved from their humble beginnings in the mid-nineteenth century to the high-end sneakers made in the last decade. Rise of Sneaker Culture is the first exhibition to study the social history and cultural relevance of the footwear worn by billions of people worldwide.

An estimated 150 pairs of sneakers are on display in the exhibition, which explores how the sneaker has evolved from its modest beginning to its current significance as a status symbol.

Works from manufacturers, such as Converse, Nike and Puma are also included. Private collectors include hip-hop icon Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, sneaker guru Bobbito Garcia, and Obsessive Sneaker Disorder’s Dee Wells, who has collected sneakers for over 30 years. Sneakers by Prada and other major fashion houses and designers, as well as collaborations with artists such as Damien Hirst and Shantell Martin, are also on display.
