The seven-time World Champion placed second to George Russell in the Australian Grand Prix, and he praised his Mercedes colleague.
George Russell’s current efforts have been hailed by Lewis Hamilton, who described his teammate’s rise to second place in the Drivers’ rankings as “amazing.”
Despite the squad’s troubles with their car, both Mercedes racers have collected points in every round of the 2022 Formula One season.
Russell, on the other hand, has won the last two races and placed third in the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday, his maiden podium with the Silver Arrows.
Hamilton finished fourth on the day when his W13 overheated, preventing him from challenging for the lead.
Hamilton: Russell has done a “excellent” job
Russell sits second on the List Championship standings after a string of points-scoring finishes, albeit he still trails leader Charles Leclerc by 34 points.
In the meantime, Hamilton is in fifth place, one position ahead of former championship challenger Max Verstappen.
“It’s great,” Hamilton said to the media, including RacingNews365.com, when questioned how thrilled he was to see Russell take P2 in the Drivers’ rankings after his podium in Melbourne.
“He’s done an amazing job. He did an amazing job [in the Australian Grand Prix], had great pace.
“He’s been so solid these first three races, and he’s working and really grafting away. He’s doing an amazing job.”
Mercedes must improve its performance
Despite their strong performance in Australia, both Hamilton and Russell have stated that Mercedes still has more to do to address their car difficulties.
Hamilton claims that the squad would do everything necessary to get more power as quickly as feasible.
“There’s performance to be gained in areas that we know,” the British driver said.
“And we need it now. Not in two or three races, as we all know, as a team. But yeah, [we’ve] just got to keep that encouragement. Keep that energy high.”
