George Russell and Lewis Hamilton started working together at Mercedes in 2022, and since then, Russell has noticed how Hamilton’s journey to success may have been different from other racers’.
George Russell has shared his perspective about Lewis Hamilton’s “unique” strategy in Formula 1.
In 2022, Russell joined the seven-time World Champion’s Mercedes squad as Valtteri Bottas’ replacement.
Even though the Silver Arrows had a challenging season, Russell was still able to learn from racing next to Hamilton, who is famous for having a variety of interests outside of motorsport, such as his efforts to promote diversity.
“Lewis is an incredibly unique character,” Russell remarked on Lewis’ extraordinary individuality in an interview with The High Performance Podcast.
“I think he’s incredibly inspiring with all of his activities and projects he has off-circuit.
“When you look at drivers from the past who are just pure racing drivers, [who think] ‘I’m going to wake up living and breathing this sport’, he does things so differently to so many other people, yet has still had so much success along the way.”
Russell: Hamilton proves that there isn’t just one path to achievement
Russell compares how Hamilton has approached the sport in a distinct way from other accomplished F1 racers to how the world’s top athletes each take a unique approach to the sport.
The Britishman referred to Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic as the “three greats of the sport.”
“Statistically, they’ve all basically achieved exactly the same achievements, yet they have three totally different ways of playing. I’m sure they train differently.
“When you watch them, they look different. When you see them on court, they excel on different courts or playing fields, yet they’re three greats.
“I think the thing I take away from that, and also what I take away from Lewis, is that there is no one path to success. I think you need to find your own path, your own journey.
“You need to have that self belief that, even if somebody is going down a certain path, you need to follow your own course and you need to do what is best for you.”
