McLaren has won their first race in Formula One since 2012, and they did so with a one-two finish in Monza, with Daniel Ricciardo crossing the finish line first and Lando Norris close behind. It was a dramatic Italian Grand Prix from the start, with title leaders Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton even colliding in lap 26.
Ricciardo began behind Verstappen, but was able to pass the championship leader on the first lap, and the Australian established the race pace from there.
Behind, Hamilton saw an opportunity to pass Verstappen after an uncharacteristically extended Red Bull pit stop for the Dutchman, but they collided as they battled for position following Hamilton’s exit from the pits. Verstappen’s car bounced up as he hit the curb, and it even ended up on top of Hamilton’s Mercedes.
It was at that point that McLaren fans began to hope that this could be their day, and cool driving from Ricciardo and Norris saw them take an amazing one-two finish.
“To lead literally from start to finish, I don’t think any of us expected that,” Ricciardo stated after the race.
“To not only win, but to get a one-two… it’s insane!”
Valtteri Bottas joined the two McLaren drivers on the podium, overtaking Sergio Perez into third after the Mexican had five seconds added to his race time for overtaking by leaving the track limits earlier in the afternoon.
“I’m glad we got more points than Red Bull,” the Finn said.
“From my side it was good race. It was shame about the crash with Lewis and Max.”
