See you later, alligator named 2020! The year had enough of bite, but now that it’s over, it’s time to recalibrate for 2021. In the new year, there is so much possibility and promise. Diet, health, and self-improvement goals are probably best left to qualified professionals and/or YouTube, but there are a few sneaker-related goals that we can recommend. These are the sneakerhead resolutions for the coming year of 2021.
Rock, Don’t Stock!
Wearing sneakers on a regular basis has proven to be very difficult in recent times, and is probably the sneakerhead equivalent of taking up running in the new year. Many collections and rotations, understandably, have been dormant for big swaths of 2020, as more time than normal was spent indoors. So, in 2021, all those anticipated pairs, collabs, and deadstock treasures should be ready to hit the streets. Those Dunks you bought in 2020 aren’t going to wear themselves, so lace up and/or put on a pair of crisp kicks or broken-in beaters and get outside! It’s finally time to put your shoes on.
Buy Your Damn Size
There isn’t much you can do about your present shoe size besides costly surgery. Physical characteristics like as hair and eye color, ear lobe form, and, yes, foot size are all determined by the genetic lottery. So, while it’s possible to squeeze into something a half-size smaller or double-sock to fill in gaps when going up a size, keep that in mind. Sometimes things just don’t work out, like some women’s colorways only going up to a 12 (or 10.5 for males). To be fair, this resolution is aimed squarely at the resellers who will buy anything from size 7 to 13 in any quantity.
Buy your damn size! The stores that are increasingly enforcing a “Buy Your Size” policy deserve credit. Of course, the only exception is younger SF readers who may be waiting for another growth spurt. If that’s the case, go up a size so you can grow into them.
Become a Sustainable Sneakerhead
It’s difficult to resist the impulse to acquire and wear more new sneakers. While quitting cold turkey defeats the objective of being into sneakers in the first place, conscious copping is still achievable. Buying used shoes decreases the ecological impact of the shoe industry and increases the life of the pre-loved pair. Because used shoes aren’t for everyone, there are an increasing number of new sneakers on the market that are manufactured from a combination of recycled, upcycled, repurposed, and/or natural materials, which is better for the environment in the long run. And they’re looking much nicer than the hemp sack shoes of yesteryear! Nike’s Space Hippie series, the Parley x adidas collaborations, or the Converse Renew Chucks are just three of many options from brands big and small.

Support Women in the Sneaker Industry
Women are killing it behind the scenes of all the greatest collabs and colorways, but their stories and accomplishments aren’t always heard or recognized. You’d be astonished to find out who designed your favorite footwear in 2020! It’s past time to bring attention to the women who work in the sneaker industry. While it may be difficult to know where to begin, pages such as Sneakers By Women are showing the wealth of talent that exists at all levels. Other places to fight for more female-focused accessibility include providing size runs that genuinely cater for smaller feet – especially the (literally) huge releases that commonly start at a men’s 7.
Donate
Many sneakerheads will have more shoes than they would ever wear throughout their lives, but consider those who may not have even a single pair to keep their feet safe. Shoes are getting on the feet of some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities thanks to organizations like Soles4Souls, and there are plenty of local nonprofits that can help as well. In fact, donating your lightly used shoes in good usable condition to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army can be a smart place to start. Please don’t use these locations as a dumping ground for things you couldn’t sell on eBay or Instagram for a profit.
The important thing about these resolutions is that there’s no deadline – some are lifelong pursuits, while others simply need to be done to achieve them. Good luck in 2021!
