Red Bull’s performance in the Austrian Grand Prix was outperformed by Ferrari, prompting Damon Hill to wonder if some car problems are having a greater negative impact on the Milton Keynes team than they would want.

Damon Hill acknowledges that he was startled by how much Ferrari outperformed Red Bull at the Austrian Grand Prix, which made him wonder if Max Verstappen’s team was experiencing any technical difficulties.

The Milton Keynes-based team’s weekend got off to a good beginning as the Dutchman won the Sprint on Saturday after earning pole position in Friday’s qualifying.

Charles Leclerc, who finished in second, cautioned that he had the speed to contend in the race on Sunday. This forecast came true, and Leclerc won the race ahead of Verstappen, who tried to deal with tyre wear throughout the competition.

Hill did not anticipate the Scuderia to have such a lead in GP because they have recently struggled to compete with Red Bull on several occasions.

“[It was] a bit of a turnaround, a bit of a surprise to see Ferrari looking like they’ve caught up Red Bull, and making this a bit more of a championship for us, which is fantastic,” Hill told the F1 Nation podcast.

Why Hill was astonished by Ferrari’s strength in Austria

Hill agreed that it’s possible that Ferrari had the speed all along but had been held back by reliability, strategic plan, and external factors, as indicated by commentator Tom Clarkson.

He was nevertheless surprised, though, to discover that the Scuderia outperformed Red Bull at their home track in Austria.

“What I meant was that, on certain circuits, you’d put it [as] being a Red Bull track, or Ferrari would do better at certain other circuits,” Hill explained.

“But in their backyard, in their own track that they have dominated now for quite a long time, to be clearly not as quick as the Ferrari was a surprise, I thought.”

Has Red Bull undergone more “pain” than Ferrari?

Hill has wondered whether Red Bull’s issues with cars are worse than they may have first appeared to be in light of their issues in Austria.

“[It was] maybe an indicator that they’ve got some issues which might be handicapping them more than they want to,” the 1996 World Champion added.

“The tyre degradation thing on the Red Bull, it looked like they were suffering more than Ferrari.”
