Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema will be the only forward with double-digit goals in La Liga for another another season. In reality, after 27 Matchdays, Vinicius Junior is the only other forward with at least three goals in the 2020-2021 season.
Hardly ideal for a “Galactic” club, right?
Los Blancos aim to be the best team in the world and to win every trophy available to them. To do so, they’ll need to sign a blockbuster forward this summer, which will be difficult given the COVID-19 pandemic’s financial impact.
Let’s take a look at Los Merengues’ top five targets and weigh in on the benefits and drawbacks of signing each player.
Juventus FW Cristiano Ronaldo
We’ll start with Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, who made quite an impression on the globe by scoring a flawless hat-trick in 32 minutes against Cagliari, despite never scoring at the Sardegna Arena before. Ronaldo’s three goals put him in first place in Serie A with 23 goals in 23 games, and they came only days after he was criticized for his performance against Porto in the Champions League Round of 16.
Pros:
Ronaldo is one of, if not the best, pure goal scorers in the world. Juan Cuadrado is the only player on the team who can regularly throw the ball to him, especially in the air. Ronaldo’s Juve supporting cast is lacking outside of Cuadrado, Federico Chiesa, and, on occasion, Alvaro Morata. He’d be familiar with the lay of the land at Real Madrid, and he’d be able to play with Karim Benzema, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos once more.
He is the top player in Champions League history. Los Merengues are looking to win the Champions League again. Sounds simple, right?
Ronaldo is the type of megastar and locker-room personality who can elevate the spirits of both the fans and the squad. That is not to be overlooked. Real has a lot of character, but the lack of firepower is discouraging the supporters, and the team doesn’t appear to have that extra something in the last third. Plus, nostalgia isn’t a bad thing in the eyes of the fans.
Cons:
Cristiano Ronaldo is a 36-year-old footballer. He could only play top-level football for a few more years. But there’s a chance he has much more. In any case, Real will be unable to assemble a team around him. He is a short-term, all-in signing.
Ronaldo’s wages, which are expected to exceed 30 million euros, may hinder the team from acquiring a young, building-block superstar like Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe. The majority of Madrid supporters want Ronaldo to return, but not at the expense of the team’s future.
Sequels are rarely better than the original. What happens if Real sign Ronaldo, nobody else, and still don’t win the Champions League?
