F1 fans are in for a nervous day, as both Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton might face penalties at the Brazilian Grand Prix, which could have a major impact on the title race.
Lewis Hamilton was by far the fastest driver in Friday’s qualifying session at the Brazilian Grand Prix, winning pole position ahead of Saturday’s Sprint Qualifying event. Max Verstappen finished second.
However, the Formula One world exploded just hours later. Following qualifying, it was revealed that Hamilton was being investigated by the stewards for a possible violation of the Drag Reduction System (DRS). Hamilton’s rear wing was impounded, and a stewards’ hearing was postponed until Saturday.
Verstappen was also called to the stewards for alleged violations the FIA International Sporting Code regarding parc ferme conditions. After qualifying, the Dutchman was seen on fan footage touching Hamilton’s rear wing.
On Saturday, Verstappen will report to the stewards, and the outcome should be known then. But what kind of penalty may Verstappen be facing?
Possible penalties for Verstappen
Verstappen and a Red Bull representative will have to report to the stewards at 9:30 a.m. local time (12:30 p.m. GMT). The incident will be discussed there, as well as whether or not a penalty will be imposed.
What could be in store for Verstappen?
- An admonition
- A fine
- Penalty points on his licence
- A grid penalty of three or five places
Or a combination of the above.
It’s difficult to say what the possible penalty will be in advance, but it’s likely to be a reprimand and/or a fine. In Formula 1, however, the stewards’ decision is frequently surprising.
