Perez reveals why Verstappen’s racing style is so distinctive

Sergio Perez talks about his performance improvement at Red Bull and what it’s like to drive with Max Verstappen during an exclusive talk.

Perez Verstappen Red Bull 2022

Although squad member Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez both concede that they have quite different racing styles, Perez claims he feels more at home in Red Bull’s recent car.

Perez had a tough first season with the squad, but in 2022 he has improved his pure speed and is currently 3rd in the rankings after a win and five second-place results.

Even though the two players are separated by 85 points at the midway stage of the season, the Mexican has been inspired by his overall performance when compared to the defending World Champion.

“I think being in my second year with the team, and the change of regulations, it definitely helped me,” Perez told RacingNews365.com in an exclusive interview.

“It was a good improvement. I think I’m more comfortable in the car this season.”

The “biggest difference” between Perez and Verstappen

When comparing his driving style to Verstappen’s, Perez said that they frequently “look for different things” in their setup.

When questioned about Verstappen desiring more oversteer and a sharper feeling in the car, he responded, “Sometimes we come very close; on some weekends we are incredibly close, and on some others we are not so close.

When prodded for more information, Perez responded, “The main difference between us is how we apply the throttle and how we brake.

“[But beyond that] I find it very difficult to compare what’s the difference between drivers in terms of driving styles, because every time it’s different.”

How do these variations affect the progress of Red Bull?

Despite the fact that the two have “different perceptions” for the RB18, Perez denied that this has made it more difficult for Red Bull to develop the car.

“No, we are both pushing the direction of the car,” he made clear.

“At the end of the day, the team is doing the development and we are pushing and trying to get the most out of it every single weekend.”

Perez provided a straightforward answer to the question of how the squad might enhance the car’s balance and save up time during the second half of the season.

“Well, it would be good to improve it all around, and to try to be a bit more complete in all areas,” he summed up.
