Valentino Rossi, the seven-time MotoGP world champion, is expected to announce his retirement from the sport soon.
The Styrian Grand Prix has organized an outstanding news conference for this afternoon.
The Petronas Yamaha rider had previously stated that he would make a decision on his future during MotoGP’s summer break, which ends today at the Red Bull Ring, and the unusual step of announcing an extraordinary press conference suggests that choice has been made.
While there has been conjecture in recent weeks that he will return to his own VR46 Ducati team in 2022 rather than retiring after 26 seasons in the sport, The Race’s sources in the MotoGP paddock believe the news will instead be a retirement announcement.
That fits with the late news this morning that the special press conference will be conducted by series promoter Dorna, not by Rossi’s Petronas Yamaha team or by his own representatives.
The special addition to the schedule will get underway at 1615 local time (1515 UK time).
In addition to running his MotoGP team, Rossi is expected to race a Ferrari in the 2022 World Endurance Championship.
