On the series’ first visit to the Czech Most circuit, Jonathan Rea continued his flawless qualifying record in the 2021 World Superbike season, beating title challenger Toprak Razgatlioglu to pole place.
With a best time of 1m31.684s on his third run of the session, Kawasaki’s Rea grab the top spot at the end of the 15-minute Superpole shootout.
This put the six-time world champion 0.067s ahead of Razgatlioglu’s Yamaha, who had taken the provisional lead with two minutes to go only to be beaten by Rea.
Rea now has six poles out of a possible six in 2021, making him the WSBK’s longest pole streak since Tom Sykes’ comparable run in 2013.
Scott Redding of Ducati, who had won third practice earlier in the day, looked to be on his way to winning the race when he was quickest in the first two sectors on his penultimate lap – which he lost due to a yellow flag – and then fastest in the first three sectors on his final lap.
But his qualifying tyre couldn’t quite hold on for a second full lap, and he dropped half a second in the final sector alone, finishing third behind Rea and Razgatlioglu on the grid.
Sykes was fourth fastest for BMW, ahead of Garrett Gerloff’s GRT Yamaha in fifth and Andrea Locatelli’s Crescent-run factory R1 in second.
Leon Haslam was the best of the Honda riders in seventh place, with Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Ducati), Alex Lowes (Kawasaki), and Axel Bassani (Kawasaki) finishing top ten (Motocorsa Ducati).
On the second factory Honda, Alvaro Bautista finished 11th, ahead of the two YART Yamaha wildcards, Marvin Fritz and home hero Karel Hanika, who are riding FIM Endurance World Championship-spec bikes.
Chaz Davies’ problems on the Go Eleven Ducati continued as he qualified 16th, one position ahead of Michael van der Mark’s second BMW.
On his Pedercini Kawasaki, American rider Jayson Uribe qualified 23rd and last for his first-ever WSBK race.
