Following addition of Las Vegas for the 2023 season, Zak Brown has given his opinion on the increasing F1 schedule.
After the inclusion of a 3rd race in the United States, with Las Vegas joining the track line-up, McLaren CEO Zak Brown has revealed the modifications he would want to see implemented to the F1 schedule.
The Las Vegas Grand Prix will make its debut on the schedule upcoming season, with the Saturday-night event planned to take place in November 2023 under the lights.
F1 is attempting to expand into more places than ever before, while continuing to thrive in the lucrative US market, thanks to commercial rights holder Liberty Media.
However, the sport’s latest 23-race calendar, which is squeezed into a 36-week span, is already proving to be a massive logistical challenge.
Brown expects 30 venues to share a shorter Formula One schedule
“If you could wave a magic wand, I’d like to see something like 21 or 22 races,” said Brown, speaking to Reuters.
However, the McLaren boss wants to see F1 race at 30 places on a regular basis, developing and benefiting from a diverse range of markets, albeit not all in the same season.
Some tracks would rotate, holding F1 events on a regular basis — but not every season.
“[It would be a calendar of] 17 or 18 as permanent fixtures and seven or eight that rotate,” he explained.
“Because I do think, to continue to grow the sport, the more quality markets we can be in, the better.
“I think there are ‘A markets’ and ‘B markets’ that we race in. Maybe your ‘B markets’ [should be] every other year.”
Three races in the United States are “nearly perfect”
F1’s commercial rights holders, Liberty Media, have expressed an interest in staging a fourth Grand Prix in the United States, according to RacingNews365.com.
One competition would be conducted on the east coast (in Miami), one in the middle of the country (in Austin), one farther west (in Las Vegas), and one on the west coast (in Los Angeles) (most likely in Long Beach).
“I think these are three awesome markets,” said Brown, commenting on the races already set to be staged in the US in 2023.
“I think it’s almost the perfect schedule from an American standpoint.”
