After Sunday’s Formula 1 race in Imola, Lance Stroll was demoted in the final standings, allowing Pierre Gasly to gain points.
Lance Stroll of Aston Martin finished seventh in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix on Sunday, the second of 23 races on the 2021 Formula One schedule, at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, giving the constructor its best finish since 1959.
With this result, he moved up to ninth place in the driver standings, after finishing 10th and scoring one point at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix at Bahrain International Circuit a few weeks ago.
His performance propelled Aston Martin from sixth to fifth place in the constructor rankings.
However, Stroll ended up losing his seventh place result due to a post-race penalty.
Fortunately, unlike Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen, who was penalized and lost both of his points from Sunday’s race due to his penalty, Stroll was able to salvage four points with an eighth-place finish.
After it was determined that he had broken the rules by overtaking Pierre Gasly late in the race, he was dropped to eighth position behind AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly. He was given a five-second penalty after the race because he exited the track and acquired “a lasting advantage” when passing Gasly in turns two and three of the 21-turn, 3.05-mile (4.908-kilometer) road course in Imola, Emilia-Romagna, Italy.
Because Stroll finished 0.909 seconds ahead of Gasly, the five-second penalty gave Gasly a 4.091-second lead for seventh place.
Stroll is now 10th in the driver standings, one point behind Gasly in ninth after the two swapped places, and Aston Martin is sixth in the constructor standings, three points behind AlphaTauri in fifth after the two swapped places.
