Kyle Busch is No. 1 in this week’s NBC Sports NASCAR Power Rankings despite his day ending early at New Hampshire due to no fault of his own.
Even with the last-place finish Sunday, Busch has been strong lately. The top-three finish in New Hampshire ended a run of four top-three finishes in a row. He has won nine races in a row. In the seven races leading up to New Hampshire, Busch averaged 45.3 points per race.
While the top two drivers, Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson, remain the same, there are three new drivers in the top ten: Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell, and Brad Keselowski. William Byron, Tyler Reddick, and Martin Truex Jr. have all been replaced.
NASCAR Power Rankings after New Hampshire
1. Kyle Busch (Last week: No. 1) — Being the first into a section of wet track at New Hampshire resulted in an accident in the first laps on Sunday. Drivers had reported that it was raining, but NASCAR had yet to display a caution. Officials’ actions have an impact on all sports and are a part of the game, but Busch’s last-place result will not knock him out of the top spot in this week’s standings, especially considering what he’s done in previous weeks. In the last eight races, he had six top-five finishes.
2. Kyle Larson (Last week: No. 2) — To finish seventh at New Hampshire, he broke a streak of two finishes outside the top ten (spun by a teammate at Road America and had a speeding penalty at Atlanta). In the last 11 races, he has nine top ten finishes. He hasn’t led a lap in the last four races, which is tied for the longest drought of the season.
3. Alex Bowman (Last week: No. 4) — His ninth-place finish is his eighth top 10 in the last 10 races.
4. Denny Hamlin (Last week: No. 5) — In New Hampshire, he overcame an incident at the start on a wet track to finish 10th. His last eight races have yielded five top 10 finishes. He has five top 10s in the last eight races. With 10 points in the last12 stages, Hamlin maintains his lead.
5. Chase Elliott (Last week: No. 3) — In the last six races, he has finished outside the top 10 four times.
6. Kurt Busch (Last week: No. 6)
7. Ryan Blaney (Last week: Unranked)
8. Christopher Bell (Last week: Unranked)
9. Joey Logano (Last week: No. 10)
10. Brad Keselowski (Last week: Unranked)
Dropped out: William Byron (No. 7), Tyler Reddick (No. 8), Martin Truex Jr. (No. 9)
