Toto Wolff used to call Jos Verstappen and Max on a daily basis, but the Dutchman now wants it to stop.
Helmut Marko said in April 2019 that Wolff called Jos and Max on a frequent basis with the intention of one day taking the Red Bull driver to Mercedes.
Although Verstappen Sr. denied that the Austrian spoke to his son, he did confess that he and Wolff spoke on the phone on occasion.
Following the British Grand Prix, where Max was hospitalized after colliding with Lewis Hamilton on the opening lap, Jos was dissatisfied with Wolff and his team’s actions and has stated that such phone calls will no longer be made.
“You don’t celebrate your victory with such euphoria when your colleague is still in the hospital.”
“And as for Toto Wolff: We have had good contact for years, he kept calling and smeared honey around our mouths. I think everyone knows why.
“He didn’t get in touch yesterday. Now he no longer needs to call.”
The issue of who was at fault for the incident between Verstappen and Hamilton has been hotly debate, with Red Bull believing the Briton, who was given a 10-second penalty, should have been penalized more severely, while Mercedes and the driver himself insisted he did nothing wrong.
The majority of former Formula One drivers appeared to agree with the Dutchman and his crew, with David Coulthard and Mark Webber both saying that the seven-time World Champion was to blame for the accident.
Jacques Villeneuve has continued that trend, with, in his eyes, Hamilton’s desire to win his home race getting the better of him.
“Lewis misjudged the situation,” the Canadian told the same site.
“I think the pressure – to be beaten by Max in his home race as well – was so great that he subconsciously accepted the risk.
“I think that in any other race he would have taken off the accelerator earlier in this corner.”
Hamilton is adamant that Verstappen’s attitude was to blame for their British Grand Prix collision, claiming that he has learned to temper his own aggression over the years and that his rival must do the same.
