Take a look at the newest ‘Daytona Vortex’ artwork, which features the NASCAR driver
Jimmie Johnson has won the NASCAR Cup Series seven times. He went to victory lane at the Daytona 500 in 2006, which was a career highlight for him.
Below is Jimmie Johnson’s firesuit artwork.
His winning firesuit has been cut into bits and turned into a work of art 15 years later. It’s all set to go on exhibit now.
“Daytona Vortex” is the title of the piece.

“E.V. Day did an incredible job transforming my 2006 Daytona 500 winning firesuit into this work of art. It will be on display at the The Mint Museum starting today through June 5, 2022 if you’re in Charlotte and interested in experiencing it in person,” Jimmie Johnson tweeted.
EV Day comments
New York-based artist E.V. Day Suspension art is what the 54-year-old is known for.
“It celebrates the power and heroism of humankind’s innovation,” Day says. “Tectonically the language of the piece highlights the friction between man and machine — softness of the highly tailored fabric to the rigid structure of the hardware. It may seem that these forces are at odds, but they are interdependent on one another,” Day says.
The artist was commissioned to create the piece by Jimmie Johnson. The costume and the artwork are still his.
Mint Museum comments
“Like Transporter, Daytona Vortex is visually stunning and conceptually powerful as it pushes us to rethink ideas around gender, dress, social interactions, expectations and popular culture,” said Jen Sudul Edwards, PhD, chief curator and curator ofcontemporary art at the Mint. “It’s also a poignant reconsideration of sports heroes like Jimmie Johnson and the tension that must be maintained between the physical and intellectual, assurances and risk, in order to succeed.”
Charlotte, North Carolina is home to the Mint Museum. The artwork will be on display at the Museum’s Uptown site until June 5, 2022. The sculpture may be located on Level 3 in the Gorelick Gallery.
