Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series winner, has tested positive for coronavirus. Johnson is the first NASCAR driver to test positive for the respiratory illness, and as a result, he will be unable to compete this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

According to Hendrick Motorsports, Johnson is asymptomatic but will not be able to return to racing until he has been cleared by a physician.

Johnson stated in a statement provided by NASCAR that his first focus is the health and safety of his family ones and teammates.

“I’ve never missed a race in my Cup career, but I know it’s going to be very hard to watch from the sidelines when I’m supposed to be out there competing. Although this situation is extremely disappointing, I’m going to come back ready to win races and put ourselves in playoff contention.”

Johnson’s goal of being one of three drivers to win the Indianapolis five times has been thrown into jeopardy by this diagnosis. Only Jeff Gordon and Michael Schumacher have previously accomplished this feat.

Johnson, who is currently 12th in the Cup Series standings and has 663 consecutive Cup Series starts, was set to retire at the end of the season. He was also scheduled to test on an IndyCar track next week, but that has been canceled as well.

Johnson’s replacement, Justin Allgaier, will drive the No. 48 Chevrolet on Sunday. He drives the No. 7 vehicle for JR Motorsports, which is co-owned by Hendrick, the owner of Johnson’s car, in the Xfinity Series full-time.
